Edenderry Community Development Association

A Community Association based in Portadown

This group has now intergrated with the main Association
Edenderry Business and Residents Association and was formed at a meeting on the 10th October 2005 in First Portadown Presbyterian Church Hall. After some discussion a committee was elected and it was decided to seek affiliation with Edenderry Community Development Association.

The group was to lobby various agencies and take a proactive role in safety, traffic, health and the environment.

In order to ascertain needs,a social audit of all dwellings and businesses had been carried out and the results can be seen under the Articles section on the tabs above.

The people of Edenderry are “disgusted, disappointed and incredulous after the retail boundaries plan excluded most of the Edenderry area from the Portadown town centre plan.

Edenderry Community Development Association fiercely criticised the government document condemning our area to remain a blot on the Portadown landscape.

Portadown was incubated in Edenderry. For over three centuries the road through Edenderry and over the Bann Bridge has brought talent, expertise and muscle to build and expand Portadown. The growth of Portadown in the 19th century called for a wider bridge to be built on dry ground on the Edenderry side of the river before a new channel was cut under it once again allowing people to cross to the town side of Edenderry which then included Castle Street, Meadow Lane and the Pleasure Gardens.

In 1845 the Town Commissioners obtained an extension of their power in order to control the lighting of the town, among the first erected in Ireland, from the Gas Works in Edenderry.

Many people’s first introduction to Portadown was in our once highly acclaimed railway station which the so called planners said had to go, an act of criminal vandalism!

In no other area of Britain would planners go out of their way to obstruct proposals from a private company willing to inject a vast amount of much need investment into an area that as may be seen from the photographs has become an abandoned eyesore on a main arterial thoroughfare into the town. This is especially relevant in today’s economic climate were the proposed development would bring much needed construction jobs and revitalise the area leading to further much needed job opportunities in the retail and service sectors.

We have had many e-mails and phone calls from members of the public who are horrified at the PAC decisions and I sincerely hope that the ‘powers that be’ come down from their ivory towers and live in the real world. They should welcome investors who have the foresightedness to move forward and improve communities.
